aq-4105 A few months ago, I had my hair professionally colored for the first time in years. I’d been a drugstore-box-dye junkie since the first time I ever dyed my hair when I was about 18 – though I hadn’t ever before had it dyed when it was as long as it’s gotten now, and I can say with certainty that box dye is staying away from these locks indefinitely (or at least, until I hack it short again).

Anyway. Since I was investing around 200x more than I usually did in dying my hair, I was determined to take care of my new color as best I could. In addition to buying higher-end shampoo and conditioner, I invested in a shower water filter. Little did I know how much I would genuinely benefit from it…

The filter I decided to go with, after quite a bit of shopping around, was the Aquasana Shower Filter with Handheld Massage Wand. Pretty much all of the filters I’d found through beauty stores met the same purification qualities, and Aquasana was a much better deal price-wise ($79.99, as opposed to the $200-$500 of beauty store brands).

I haven’t been at all disappointed with my choice.

While I expected the filter to do a good job of removing any mineral or chemical residues that might shorten the life of my new haircolor, I did not expect it to go above and beyond that: since I installed the filter, my hair not only retained the color beautifully, but the tone never altered, and my hair has actually gotten far shinier and healthier-looking. Additionally, my skin has gotten clearer and smoother – I had been plagued by ingrown hairs on my legs for a couple of years now, and they’ve all but vanished now!

As for that installation…I do happen to be a plumber’s daughter, so I’m not shy about pipes and water and tools. I’ve stuck my hands down toilets a fair few times to retrieve things other women might deem lost forever. After reading the instructions, nothing about it scared or squicked me, and it was a breeze to hook up. I will say that if you are a bit hesitant (and don’t have a plumber you can call for free advice, like I do), definitely read through the instructions thoroughly before getting started. Not all of it is intuitive, and I did need a little guidance from my dad after skimming through the directions instead of being more diligent.

This is definitely a must-have product in my beauty arsenal now. I absolutely love my shower filter, and thanks to the Water-for-Life Program that Aquasana offers, the replacement filters are way more reasonable than other shower filter brands. If you’re in the market for a shower filter (and you should be, no matter how good your water supply seems to be – I had no idea it was possible to see the difference I have!), I highly recommend that you consider Aquasana’s.
